HEARTLAB, INC., LEADER IN CARDIAC IMAGE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE, PARTNERS WITH BASIS TECHNOLOGY TO EXPAND INTO INTERNATIONAL MARKETS
— Toshiba Corporation Medical Systems to Distribute Heartlabs Internationalized Cardiac Image Review and Storage Management Software in Japan —
Cambridge, MA, September 10, 2002—Basis Technology, a leading provider of products and services for software globalization and multilingual information processing, today announced the successful completion of an internationalization project with Heartlab, Inc., a leader in the development of cardiac image management software and the integration of cardiac information network systems.
Heartlab partnered with Basis Technology to internationalize its Encompass Review Station software in preparation for its global distribution, with Japan as the first international market. By Unicode-enabling the product, Heartlab will be able to support Japanese and seamlessly add other languages in the future. In addition, Basis Technology worked closely with Heartlab to add support for the international features of the DICOM standard (a methodology for the transmission of medical images and their associated information).
The Encompass Review Station is part of the Encompass cardiovascular information management system which gives cardiologists fast, easy and efficient access to all the cardiac patient information they need to make more timely, informed decisions. Toshiba Corp. Medical Systems, Japans market leader for medical systems, distributes Heartlabs Encompass products in Japan under the name CardioAgent.
Our work with Basis Technology has been a critical step in executing our plan to expand internationally, said Robert Petrocelli, Heartlabs CEO. By doing the right job of Unicode-enabling our products, we are well positioned to quickly penetrate markets in Japan and Europe.
It was important for this work to get done because we are starting to see strong demand for Encompass across Japan, said Mitsuo Oe, Senior Manager, Toshiba Corp. Medical Systems. Basis Technologys excellent internationalization work will allow us to quickly take advantage of these opportunities.
Our work with Heartlab was particularly interesting because we gained expertise in internationalizing software that processes DICOM files. DICOM is used by most medical professions that rely on images, said Benson Margulies, CTO, Basis Technology. We will be able to apply this expertise to internationalize imaging software for other medical industries including surgery, radiology, pediatrics, and many others.
